Luminescent sensing has been suggested for pathogen detection due to its high sensitivity, simplicity, and label-free characteristics. In this study, a new class of luminescent sensor for pathogen detection was developed by coating amino functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs-NH2) with poly (o-aminophenol)s (OPAs) covalently attached with CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) via two kinds of amide linkages. The conjugated OPAs covalently attached with CdSe/ZnS QDs (OPAs-QDs) could effectively function as a recognition element for selectively binding Escherichia coli O157:H7. The interactions between OPAs and E. coli O157:H7 were detected by measuring the quenching of OPAs-QDs' photo luminescence. The dynamic quenching caused by the recognition event could be quantified by measuring the lifetimes of QDs luminescence. Under optimum experimental conditions, the quenching efficiency of OPAs-QDs could reach 99%.
